The art of framing my batiks!
I have developed a framing solution that emphasizes the organic, natural aspects of the batik by particularly highlighting the 100% cotton on which the works are painted while maintaining conservation parameters - I was very fortunate to have the expertise of the Whiterock Gallery in Whiterock, BC, which specializes in framing challenges. With the help of their designer, Amy, and framer, Byron, we envisioned a system of dry-mounting the cloth, leaving the raw edge exposed and creating a subtle shadow effect thus emphasizing the fabric. This definitely draws attention and distinguishes my work from other mediums. As conservation is of great importance, Amy and Byron confirmed that the dry-mounting glue was conservationally sound and would have no adverse affects on the artwork and, if required, the batik can be easily removed, undamaged.
I brought this framing concept closer to home where it was realized by Annette Sanders of Julie Anne's Art & Custom Framing in Chilliwack, BC. After several preliminary tests and design adjustments, Annette has become my "Framer of Choice". She is exceptionally competent with the technique, while sharing my perfectionism. Never satisfied until I am, Annette is the framer I recommend to my patrons buying unframed pieces.
